Ice fishing Shelter Essential On Most Ice Fishing Days

February 28, 2010

Ice fishing Shelter Is Essential On Most Ice Fishing Days. Shelters come in all sizes these days and are quite affordable. If you don’t have any shelter, and can’t afford to purchase a manufactured shelter, you have a few other options that you may not have thought of.

If you are only going ice fishing for the day, a portable dome tent will suffice as long as you anchor it temporarily to the ice, otherwise someone must stay in the tent to hold it down at all times.

The wind really gets going out on lakes during the winter on most days. Portable dome tents are really affordable for most everyone.

Another option is to buy a tarp and build the frame work out of inexpensive pvc, which is rather inexpensive at your local hardware store.

On most ice fishing days, you generally only need to escape from the wind, if you are dressed properly, you can survive quite well for the day.

So be prepared to fish with any Ice fishing Shelter, and You Will  Essentially Have A Great Time, On Most Ice Fishing Days.

Fishing Tip Ups Demand Attention On Cold Days

February 27, 2010

Ice fishing tip ups demand attention on cold days. It doesn’t take very long on cold windy days for most fishing tip ups to freeze in. Once this happens, it’s not uncommon for the tip ups to lose bait without triggering a flag.

Normal operation of the tip ups are constricted and large fish seem to sneak the bait off traps frequently. It is in your best interest to tend your traps on a regular basis to insure normal operation isn’t impeded.

On windy days snow is often blown into the tip up hole and the freeze process starts rather quickly. It always seems like the really big fish bite on days that aren’t fit to be out fishing.

On these type of days a portable wind block of some sort could come in real handy should you need to play out a large fish.

Ice shacks are generally secured to the ice so a portable wind block could save your from frostbite. The colder it is outside the more frequently you should tend your ice fishing tip ups.

Sebago Lake Derby Woes

February 20, 2010

Sebago lake derby is currently running here in Maine. Wardens are warning all fishermen to be extremely careful as ice conditions are not safe due to the current warm temperatures that we are experiencing.

Wardens will be patrolling the lake through out the tournament and will be watching from the air as well. Sebago lake has some extremely big fish in it but none are worth risking your life, so be extremely careful as you venture out this weekend.

Lake trout are often found in shallow water during winter months, so there is no need to venture out off shore to far. Always check ice conditions frequently to insure adequate safety.

Good luck!

UPDATE

The Sebago lake ice fishing derby was terminated, due to several people and vehicles breaking through the ice. Conditions were deemed unsafe by derby officials and it was decided to end the derby before any tragic accidents happened.

The Woes Of An Ice Fisherman

February 16, 2010

The Woes That Ice Fishermen Face Ice fishing is a great way to keep fishing through out the year! But what kind of woes do you face as an ice fishermen or woman?

While fishing is enjoyed the world over, not all fishermen are ice fishermen. Ice fishermen face quite a few woes that summertime fishing doesn’t have.

No doubt this deters a lot of summer fishermen from venturing out onto the ice for what may be the best fishing of the year.

  • Weather conditions are sometimes brutal. There is always a chance of frostbite or hypothermia.
  • Ice conditions are always a concern to the smart ice fisherman. If not closely observed, can sometimes lead to many problems, if not death.
  •  If proper preparation is taken, you can fish in much comfort. Winter can be brutal, but with an ice shack you can fish in warmth. Often times if you are dressed properly, all you really need, is to have a wind block of some kind and you can survive the day in moderate comfort.
  •  Sometimes there isn’t any snow on top of the ice and walking conditions become very hazardous, so a good pair of ice cleats should be worn.
  • Cold hands can often be a problem when playing a fish or when handling a fish. A small propane heater can come in real handy. Often times just a can of canned heat can save you from frostbite and it is relatively in expensive.

So as you can see The Woes That Ice Fishermen Face often times are the main reason why summertime fishermen prefer to wait for open water and warm weather.

These ice fisherman woes, may prevent those people from catching a fish of a lifetime.

During ice fishing season the larger fish will prowl the shoreline looking for their next meal and you can bet that all the woes in the world, won’t stop the dedicated ice fisherman from being there to greet them!

Ice Fishing Lures That Work

February 5, 2010

Ice fishing lures that work when jigging  on the ice for lake trout or salmon include the swedish pimple or the mooselook wobbler. Some times it may be neccessary to tip off the hook with a bit of fresh bait.

These two fishing lures have been the demise of many fish. The swedish pimple which comes in different sizes and colors works extremely well on lake trout or mackinaw, or as us Mainers call them togue.

When using these fishing lures to fish for togue, it has been my experience that the silver swedish pimple works the best when fishing in clear water. The swedish pimple fishing lure works well even without any bait most of the time.

One other fishing lure that seems to work really well when jigging is the mooselook wobbler. This fishing lure also comes in different sizes and colors. I have had great success using the silver with blue striped wobbler.

Both of these lures work on salmon also. You need to make sure that your lure is working just above the level of depth that the fish are holding at.

So when you are looking for ice fishing lures that work… give these two fishing lures a try and you may be pleasantly surprised at the out come.

Fishing Tip Up Types

February 3, 2010

Ice fishing tip up types vary, depending on the region that you are fishing. There are many types of tip ups a fisherman can choose from.
There are underwater tip up sets, there are top of ice sets, there are wind tip ups, with many different variations.

There are also electric motor driven jig tip ups. If you can think of a new design for a tip up, chances are it has already been manufactured.

Many tip ups exist for one to choose from, so whats the best ice fishing tip up for your fishing. I guess it would all depend on a few different things.

Tip ups that work out of the water typically aren’t good on subzero days, as your line will freeze in. This makes tending your traps a priority on a frequent basis.

These types of days are not the best days to be tending your traps every half hour or so. So under water sets are best on these types of days.

Warm days are when you would choose to use these types of tip ups. Windy warm days are when you would also choose to use a wind jig trap. A wind jig tip up will jig your bait from the power of the wind. These also work better on warmer days.

Todays technology allows one to fish on any type day. Hole covers protect your holes from freezing in and ice shacks protect you from the cold weather elements.

Fishing Tip Ups Bring Home More Fish

February 1, 2010

Fishing tip ups allow you the opportunity to fish more areas of a particular body of water. They also allow you to fish at different depths. Fish move up or down in a lake depending on the barometric pressure, and by setting your tip ups at various depths you are more likely to present your bait to more active fish.

Fish don’t see below to well and depending on the clarity of the water they might miss your bait altogether. So setting up at different levels of depth will increase your odds of having a bait in front of actively feeding fish.

If you find that a particular tip up is receiving more action, then put the rest of your tip ups at the same depth and bring home more fish.
